Everyone is going to get injured….

Maybe it will be a minor injury; a twisted ankle, a sore shoulder, a groin pull. Or maybe it will be a more serious one; a torn ligament, spinal issues, a broken bone.

But, at some point, everyone will get injured. As a matter of fact, most injuries are non-contact and not instigated by physical activity. So, if you’re a desk jockey, don’t imagine yourself to be safe from physical injury. In some ways, you’re more at risk.

What are you going to do when this happens?

Are you going to curl up into a ball and disappear? Are you going to “rest” your injury for a long period of time? Or are you going to address that injury, under the care of medical supervision, with strength training and rehabilitation?

Related: Strength training means lifting HEAVY stuff. Can we finally agree on that?

A big part of dealing with injury is mindset…

We talk a lot about growth mindset versus fixed mindset.

An old way of thinking might be that if you experience an injury you must rest and coddle that injury in perpetuity until it heals. A growth mindset approach would be to understand that, after a certain point (and always heed the advice of your medical team), too much rest and inactivity just extends the injury.

Sure, you need to be smart. You need to allow the injury some healing time. But, at some point, you have to start moving again.

Your whole body isn’t broken. And neither is your spirit. Unless you allow it to be.

Treat what you can treat, and then work on the rest….

You can keep your workout program alive, even when you’re injured. Treat the injury as directed by your physician, but don’t forget the rest of your body!

There are many ways that you can continue to be active and move safely while addressing and treating your injury.

Get help. Work with your doctor and physical therapist. Investigate. Ask questions.

When you stop moving your body begins to decay. And so does your spirit.

But, by working intelligently with your medical team in a way that addresses your injury and enables you to maintain your fitness simultaneously, you set yourself up for a quicker recovery and fewer permanent issues.
