Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is NOT the definition of insanity. That’s an urban legend. Einstein didn’t say that, no one famous said that, in fact, there’s no documentation that anyone actually said that verbatim. Doing the same thing over and over is human nature. It’s familiar and comfortable, even if it doesn’t yield the results you want. But if you’ve been trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results you are for certain setting yourself up for failure and disappointment.

So, if you have been trying to lose weight over and over and over without success, it’s time to change your approach. You hired a personal trainer, that’s a great start. You’re doing group training classes and increasing your pursuit of fitness, excellent. You’re beginning to pay attention to your nutrition; critically important! But there’s more to be done. You need to change your environment.

You need to create an environment that is supportive of success. If you surround yourself with terrible food, people who don’t believe in or partake in fitness, people who don’t support you, you’re asking for trouble. Here are some tips for changing your environment in a way that will assist your goal of weight loss:

  • Get the bad food out of the house and the good food in
  • Use smaller plates and cups to encourage the consumption of smaller portions
  • Join a group of people who participate in fitness; a running club, walking group, personal training studio or yoga class
  • Be honest with the closest people in your life about your desire to change and ask for their support
